Activities & After School Club |
The after school program strives to provide
a supportive, home-like environment for children, complete with
after school snacks. Choices of outdoor activities, games, art,
creative play, sports and quiet time for reading and/or homework
are scheduled daily. Students are encouraged to socialize with
classmates as well as younger and older Riverfield friends.
6th-12th grades are given time to participate in such activities such as Academic Bowl, Cheerleading,
Spirit Club, Colorguard, Chess Club, Open Gym. Some groups may meet before, or during school.
Riverfield Rocks is one of the most unique and progressive school band programs in the country. It uses modern and classic rock
music to teach the fundamentals of musical performance, theory, and expression in an environment that is both supportive and moderately
competitive. The program is currently split into two bands, middle and high school. Over the course of the school year, each
band works up a set of songs by memory and performs several concerts, culminating with the annual Street Party. This concert
gives the students a chance to perform in front of hundreds of people, with a large elevated stage, professional lighting and sound
reinforcement. A professional multi-angle DVD of the performance is also made as a memento for the performers and the school.
Additionally, many members of the program have professionally recorded original songs and perform outside of the school with
other bands. The creative environment that is encouraged at Riverfield makes this all possible.
Pied
Piper & Co. provides after school classes in ballet, gymnastics
and martial arts for children 3 years and older.
MusicWorld
provides music lessons including piano lessons by Karen Bentley-Bales for children 4 years
through 4th grade.
Riverfield has its own Cub
Scouts pack and Girl Scouts troop led by parents. All have
monthly activities and camping trips.
Orffans/Blue Raven Singers/Blue Raven Jrs.
Riverfield’s instrumental ensemble for K-5th is based on the work of Carl Orff, the turn-of-the-century Austrian composer of Carmina Burana. Among the first of the twentieth century musicians to be interested in what is today called World Music, he was fascinated
by the melodic capabilities of percussive instruments of other cultures. He also believed in the supreme musical experience of
working in ensemble, an experience children are ordinarily denied without years of private lessons to qualify for a youth orchestra.
Determined to alter the musical experience of children, he collected instruments, wrote orchestrations and changed the nature of musical
instruction. Riverfield’s own ensemble of “Orffans” participates in the annual Orff Festival. Riverfield also offers vocal ensembles
for Kindergarten-3rd graders. The Blue Raven Jrs. and Singers practice after school and perform in the community and at various
school events.
