Language Arts
Reading
• Genre study (poetry, fiction, non-fiction)
• Comprehension (strategies, literary elements, re-telling)
• Independent and shared reading, literature circles, read aloud
• Vocabulary development
• Book report presentations and daily lessons from reading assignments

Writing
• Writing genres (narrative, report, procedure, recount, persuasive, description, explanation)
• Structures and features
• Share sessions
• Editing/revising
• Word study of spelling features in four stages: letter name, within word, syllable juncture and derivational constancy

Shurley English
• Parts of speech
• Punctuation and capitalization
• Sentence/paragraph structure
• Letter writing
• Written assignments

Mathematics
• Everyday Mathematics program
• Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of whole numbers, fractions & decimals
• Geometry and measurement
• Data analysis and probability
• Patterns and algebraic reasoning
• Skills, reasoning and problem solving emphasized

Social Studies (2-year rotation)

  • 2008-09 Oceans and continents, regions, climates and landforms, Oklahoma/Tulsa history, states and capitals, Civil War, government, current events, geography
  • 2009-10 Countries, government, Native Americatitude/longitude and prime
    meridian, explorers and timelines, colonization, Revolutionary War, presidents, current events, geography

Science (2-year rotation)

Ongoing studies include the scientific method, lab techniques and safety, and care and concern for the environment.

  • 2008-09 Earth, space, integrated research, Science Fair
  • 2009-10 Life science, physical science, integrated research, Invention Convention, Egg Drop.

Specials
Spanish, German, art, music, library skills, and PE are a part of the weekly curriculum.
