Middle School
6th - 8th Overview |
Academics
Academic excellence is apparent at state and national levels.
The 6th/7th grade academic team was the 2003-04 Oklahoma 2A/3A
Jr. Academic Bowl Champions. The 7th/8th and 8th/9th grade academic
teams are the 2004-05 champions. Students continue to test one
to two grade levels higher on average than their current grade
level standardized tests. An average of 50% of the Riverfield
7th grade students qualify for the national Duke University Talent
Identification Program (identifies academically gifted students).
Riverfield Country Day School is home to the Raven Chapter of
the National Junior Honor Society, open to second semester 7th
graders and all 8th grade students.
Athletics and Arts
Monday through Thursday, 3:15-4:30pm, athletics and arts are offered.
Students are strongly encouraged to participate in these activities.
Fall: Arts, cross country and soccer
Winter: Basketball, drama and roller hockey
Spring: Computer editing, intramural sports and tennis
Campout
Each fall, Middle School students and faculty go on a three day,
two night campout that combines academic studies, teamwork, leadership
training and relaxing fun. Activities include hiking, fishing,
science exploration, drawing and painting, sports, games, playing
instruments and teamwork games. The annual campout helps develop
relationships and sets the stage for academic and social interactions
throughout the year.
Class Size
Students develop initiative and independence as they explore,
learn and grow in Riverfields positive and supportive environment.
Small classes and the close relationships students develop with
faculty make Riverfield a safe place to mature through the challenging
adolescent years.
Community Service
Community Service is encouraged with many opportunities throughout
the year and supported by Riverfields membership in the
Presidential Service Award program and our Roots and Shoots Club.
Faculty
Taking the time to recognize, respect and appreciate each student
is a high priority with all Riverfield faculty. Active involvement
in the learning process and an integrated, interdisciplinary program
makes learning come alive. As one student states, it has
given me a passion to learn.
Life Experiences
Courses like Awareness and Service are
offered in a unique way at Riverfield. Awareness addresses
important issues including character development, team building,
health and drug education and media literacy. Service
gives each student the opportunity to serve the school as a volunteer
to a preschool or primary class, or to assist a member of Riverfields
faculty and staff. The opportunity for leadership and a sense
of giving back are key ingredients to this program.
Multiage Philosophy
The multiage philosophy is a unique aspect of the Riverfield experience
in select classes. Students have the opportunity to be led and
eventually lead in both academic and non-academic arenas.
Research
The learning and consistent application of research, study and
organizational skills are an integral part of the Middle School
program. Students are given an assignment planner and binder at
the start of the year. Teachers encourage students to use this
system, but expect students to take more responsibility for their
own organization.
School Clubs & Activities
Academic Bowl, Spirit Club, Chess Club,
Drumming Club, AudioVisual Club and Social Club
Social Activities
Once each semester, the students and faculty
plan a social outing to a basketball game, roller skating, game
night or a dance.
