K - 1st Curriculum

Reading and Language Arts
Skills and strategies of language arts are integrated throughout the curriculum including reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students begin Kindergarten with a range of reading skills. Once a student begins to read, the teacher assesses the reading level and learning style based on the Developmental Reading Assessment to personalize reading instruction. Emergent readers “read” with pictures and/or language cues. As they progress, students read word by word with short phrases.

Kindergarten
• Recognize and name all upper and lower case letters of the alphabet
• Apply phonics skills to the sound/symbol relationship to decode unknown words
• Begin to recognize first 100 sight words on the Word Wall
• Read individually with teacher
• Associate meaning and understanding for comprehension
• Put story details in correct sequence
• Understand concept of rhyme
• Appreciate literature through various author studies
• Form manuscript letters in upper and lower case
• Work daily in journals with pictures, dictation and beginning writing

1st Grade
• Read individually with teacher
• Demonstrate knowledge of letter sounds
• Apply phonics skills and spelling patterns in reading and spelling
• Recognize first 100 sight words
• Use prediction and inferences to increase comprehension
• Use basic capitalization and punctuation
• Form manuscript letters with appropriate spacing
• Write daily in journal with complete sentences
• Appreciate various genres of literature

Mathematics
Everyday Mathematics’ spiraling curriculum is structured to provide many exposures to topics and frequent oppor-tunities to review and practice skills. Features that distinguish this curriculum are real life problem solving, balanced instruction, multiple methods for basic skills practice, emphasis on communi-cation and enhanced home/school partnerships. Students are divided by grade level for math instruction.

Kindergarten
• Count using 1-to-1 correspondence
• Count in sequence
• Skip count by 5s and 10s
• Identify numbers out of sequence
• Write numerals 0 to 20
• Make and continue 3 part patterns
• Tell time to the hour
• Identify coins
• Measure and estimate
• Create and interpret real object or pictorial graphs
• Develop calendar concepts and skills

1st Grade
• Count backwards
• Skip count by 2s and 3s
• Write numerals to 100
• Tell time to the 1/2 hour
• Know the value of coins
• Know addition facts through 10
• Know subtraction facts through 10
• Write and count tallies
• Develop concept of greater than/less than
• Measure and estimate
• Create and interpret more complex graphs

World Awareness
Students learn geography and mapping skills to expand their focus beyond home and school, while literature and discussion bring to life culture and an appreciation of diversity. Current events are often included in classroom discussion.

Kindergarten
• Understand and know personal identification: full names, birthday, address, phone
• Demonstrate concept of city, state and country
• Recognize Oklahoma on a map
• Understand how history relates to events and people, other times and places

1st Grade
• Use maps and globes to locate oceans and continents
• Identify name of school, city, state and nation
• Study patriotic symbols
• Identify the events and people associated with commemorative holidays

Each year’s World Awareness curriculum includes such topics as All about Me, community, cultures, customs and celebrations plus the following topics on a two-year rotation:
2007-08 Pilgrims and colonial life, Oklahoma history/Re-enactment of Land Run and Black history
2008-09 Native Americans, presidents and family history/heritage of students

Science
Students use hands-on methods and observation to explore, discover and experiment, recording their observations and findings in science logs. Each year’s curriculum includes seasons, water, animals, human body and aerospace plus the following topics on a two-year rotation:
2007-08Weather/clouds, water cycle, magnets, animal habitats, aerospace/astronauts and Invention Convention
2008-09 Plants/seeds/food pyramid, sink and float/dissolving, five senses, endangered animals, solar system/planets and Science Fair
