A Farewell to Our Founder

A Farewell to Our Founder

Dear Riverfield Community,

It is with great sadness that I share with you the news of the passing of our Founding Head of School Martha S. Clark. Marty passed away peacefully the morning of July 22nd, with her two sons Toby and Tim by her side. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them and the extended Clark family.

Marty leaves with us a tremendous legacy in Riverfield Country Day School. Toby refers to Riverfield as her third child. Marty’s vision for an innovative school across the river in a field has come to fruition, largely due to her incredible hard work, passion, and influence on those of us that she mentored throughout her life. Marty left her mark on education, but more importantly, her life influenced so many people. She started five schools and worked with many educators and families throughout her career. It is evident that Marty’s life touched many of us in very profound ways.

When I think of Marty, I think of an excellent teacher. She spent her life teaching those around her how to be a better student, a better teacher, a better person, and how to work hard and persevere to make your dreams a reality. Riverfield was Marty’s dream, and it is up to us to make sure that her dream continues to shine brightly. We will miss you, Mrs. Clark, and we will honor your legacy.

We will honor Marty by lowering our flags to half-staff through next Friday. A service at Riverfield will take place when circumstances allow, and we will notify the Riverfield community when arrangements are completed. Please join me in passing along condolences to the Clark family. The family has requested that memorial contributions be given to Riverfield Country Day School and cards sent to them at the school’s address, The Clark Family C/O Riverfield Country Day School, 2433 W. 61st St. Tulsa, OK 74132.

If you have a fond memory or a special story about Marty that you would like to share, please email it to

Take care,

Jerry Bates
Head of School

A Celebration of Life was held with proper social distancing on August 13, 2020.  Because of the limited number of people who could attend, a life stream of the service was also available.  Click here to view the ceremony.
